Mölkky is a Finnish outdoor game of skill and precision, best enjoyed with friends or family. It combines accuracy, strategy, and a bit of luck. Here’s a brief overview of the game’s rules.
Course of the game
Goal of the game
The aim of the game is to be the first player or the first team to score exactly 50 points – by throwing a throwing stick (the Mölkky) at numbered wooden sticks (1 to 12).
Material
- 12 wooden pins numbered 1 to 12
- 1 throwing stick (the mölkky)
- A flat outdoor playing area (grass, sand, etc.)
Setup
The pins are placed close together in a specific formation with the numbers clearly visible. Cfr. images underneath.
Rules of the game
- Players take turns throwing.
- On each turn, a player throws the mölkky to try and knock down the pins.
Score
- If exactly one pin falls → you score the number on that pin.
- If multiple pins fall → you score the number of pins that fell (the numbers don’t count).
Attention: a pin must be completely knocked over (lying flat on the ground) to count.
After Each Throw
Fallen pins are stood up exactly where they landed, so the layout changes as the game goes on.
End of the game
- The first player to score exactly 50 points wins.
- If a player goes over 50, their score is reset to 25.
- A player who misses 3 turns in a row is eliminated.
