Geocaching around Lake Bütgenbach
Discover geocaching, the world’s biggest treasure hunt! Using GPS and your smartphone, you can search for hidden containers, known as caches, in nature around Worriken and Lake Bütgenbach. All you need is the Geocaching.com app and website and a spirit of adventure.

Geocaching step by step
1. Download the app
Download the free Geocaching® app for Android or iPhone and create an account. Enable location services so that the app can determine your position.
2. Choose a cache
Open the app and discover the caches near you. Choose a cache and find your own way there! The app shows you the location – you decide which route to take.
3. Go on a treasure hunt
Follow the GPS navigation to the specified location. Once you’re nearby, the real search begins! Look around carefully and use the clues in the app. Caches come in various sizes – from tiny containers to larger boxes. They’re cleverly hidden, but never buried.
4. Finding the cache
Have you found the hiding place? Congratulations! Open the container carefully. You’ll often find a small logbook inside, in which you can enter your geocaching username and the date. Larger caches may also contain small items to swap.
5. Hide everything away again
Close the container carefully and put it back in exactly the same spot. That way, the next treasure hunters can enjoy the find too. Take care not to damage the natural environment and try to be as inconspicuous as possible whilst searching.
6. Log your find in the app
Open the cache in the app, select ‘Found it’ and share your experience. That’s it – your first geocaching trip is now successfully complete!
What do you need for geocaching?
You need the following for geocaching:
✅ A charged smartphone – To find the coordinates of the geocaches.
✅ The geocaching app – Available free of charge at Geocaching.com: Here you will find a map with the hidden geocaches.
✅ An account at Geocaching.com – To view and log caches you have found. You can use a pseudonym. Without account you cannot play geocaching: the card is only visible for members.
✅ Good shoes & weather-appropriate clothing – As the caches are often hidden in nature.
✅ A pen – To sign the cache’s logbook.
✅ Small barter items (optional) – If you want to take something from a cache, you should leave something of equal value.
